The Sensory Garden
The garden was designed to give visitors an opportunity to have all of their senses stimulated as they walk around and enjoy the beauty of God's creation.

Sight
Walk down the pathway and into the central garden. In summer look carefully and you will see all the colours of the rainbow. During other seasons the colours change into more subdued hues but nevertheless add brightness to otherwise grey days.

Looking at the layout of the garden can you see the shape of a bird of peace at its heart inviting us to be still and at rest. Observe the olive tree in the centre, another sign of peace. Then look at the various signs and symbols offering visual messages on our journey.

Enjoy the different visual experiences and the changing hues that mark the passing of one season and the dawn of the next.

Hearing
Stand a while and listen. What can you hear? The trickle of water, the gentle sound of chimes, the movement of wind passing through bamboo; perhaps the chirping of birds or the buzzing of insects?

Smell
Some plants have been especially selected for inclusion in the garden because of their powerful scent: jasmine, petunias, lemon balm, sage, curry plant and various lavenders.

Touch
Scattered around the garden are plants that, when touched, release a powerful scent into the air. Try this with lavender, mint coriander and basil.

Observe and touch the different textures used in creating the garden: the wood of the fencing and seating, the brickwork with its inlaid stones, the textures of the various plants from prickly cacti and cordylines to the softness of lamb's ears.

Taste
Edible plants include lemon balm, chives, tomatoes and nasturtium leaves. There is millet in the garden and we are hopeful that one day the olive tree will bear fruit. Think of the birds too, enjoying a tasty meal of seeds and berries.

Grants
We are grateful to the following organisations who have supported the garden financially:
  • The People's Places Scheme (administered by the BTCV, English Nature and Rio Tinto)
  • The Body Shop
  • Southwick Society
  • Southwick and Fishersgate Horticultural Society
  • Southwick Nurseries
